Updated workplace recycling rules now in force for places of worship and church workplaces in Wales
Welsh Government has issued an update reminding organisations that workplace recycling requirements have been strengthened, and that it is now a legal duty for all businesses, charities and public sector bodies in Wales to separate key recyclable materials from their waste.

The updated law came into force on 6 April 2024 and applies to all workplaces in Wales, including places of worship and the offices and workplaces provided by local churches, denominations and faith organisations. Any church buildings that include halls, meeting spaces, administration offices or other facilities used as workplaces are expected to follow the new recycling arrangements.
Under the revised regulations, organisations must ensure that materials such as paper, card, plastic, metal, glass, food waste and unsold small electrical items are kept separate for collection rather than being disposed of in general waste. The changes are intended to improve both the quality and consistency of recycling collections across Wales.
Natural Resources Wales is the regulating authority for these requirements, and guidance is available to help organisations understand their responsibilities and prepare for compliance.
The updated rules form part of Wales’ wider efforts to increase recycling rates, reduce waste sent to landfill or incineration, and support the development of a stronger circular economy.
Organisations can find full information and access the official Welsh Government guidance and as an organisation, we welcome these practical steps to address waste and climate change, reduce landfill, and support our shared responsibility to steward the gift of creation.
